To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Father Kim Dae-geon, Korea’s first Catholic priest, a special outdoor Hanji lantern exhibition was held. The lanterns were designed using the official character of Father Kim and letterforms of his name, accompanied by small symbolic objects such as butterflies and dogs, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
A giant Hanji lantern in the shape of a book was placed behind the main character lantern, effectively visualizing the title and message of this commemorative event. Despite the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the exhibition was carried out with proper distancing measures, and many visitors attended to honor the life and legacy of Father Kim Dae-geon.
The exhibition was held at Solmoe Shrine in Dangjin, a significant pilgrimage site for Catholics, which regularly attracts numerous visitors. It became a popular spot, with people taking photos and reflecting on the importance of this historical figure. One particularly moving moment was seeing the image of Pope Francis placing a bouquet at Father Kim’s birthplace, which deeply touched many.
We hope that this space will continue to grow into a cultural and artistic hub for Catholic communities, honoring the legacy of Father Kim Dae-geon. Congratulations once again on his recognition as a UNESCO World Commemorative Figure of 2021.
Let us remember and celebrate the life of Father Kim Dae-geon—the first priest of Korea—and his enduring contribution to faith, culture, and history.
