Byeoljubujeon is a classic Korean novel written in Hangul, dating back to the Joseon Dynasty, though its author and exact date of origin remain unknown. The story is also known by several other titles, including “Togijaeon” (The Rabbit’s Tale), “Tosaengwonjeon,” and “Toui-gan” (The Rabbit’s Liver).
This tale is a personification fable, rooted in ancient Goguryeo folklore—particularly the story of Gwitojiseol, which features the mythical return of a turtle. The Byeoljubujeon version enriches the traditional legend with humor, satire, and wit, and represents one of the early forms of animal allegory fiction that flourished after the invention of Hangul.
