The Castle Lantern (Seonggwakdeung) is a participatory lantern experience inspired by the “Gakjaseongseok”—engraved stones that symbolize the real-name construction system used when building ancient city walls. Crafted from semi-transparent and transparent PP material, the lantern allows citizens to write their wishes or messages and stack them like stones, creating a collaborative lantern fortress.
To recreate the authentic look of a stone wall, the lanterns come in three different stone-inspired colors. For safety and stability, the pieces are designed in an interlocking "LEGO-style" structure.
The back of each lantern is designed to accommodate a lighting line, but the true highlight has always been the creativity of participating citizens. The diversity of designs—from heartfelt messages to charming illustrations—transformed the experience into a collective visual diary, offering moments of deep joy and emotion. Once completed, the Castle Lanterns form a structure approximately 10cm tall, 18cm long, and 9cm wide, and have been popular enough to be displayed at Seoul Citizens Hall even after the event ends.

How to Use the Castle Lantern
-
The lantern is provided as a flat die-cut template.
-
First, write your wish, message, or draw a picture on the surface.
-
Then, fold along the pre-cut lines.
-
-
Once folded into a rectangular shape, locate the four holes on the top panel.
-
Insert the circular connectors into the holes by twisting them into place.
-
At the event site, go to the castle frame and connect the lantern to the structure by hooking the wire on the back side.
-
Important: Do not align the lanterns vertically—they must be staggered for structural strength.
-
Finally, take a commemorative photo with your loved ones in front of your lantern on the wall.
