Grapes and Peaches

The quality of fruit is greatly influenced by sunlight and temperature. Located at the foot of Chupungnyeong Pass in the Sobaek Mountain Range, Yeongdong County boasts abundant sunshine and a large daily temperature swing. These geographic and climatic conditions contribute to the region’s exceptionally sweet and flavorful fruits, making it one of Korea’s premier fruit-producing areas.

The reason grapes grown in Yeongdong are so delicious lies in these natural advantages. In fact, Yeongdong is the largest grape-producing region in the country, accounting for 12.8% of Korea’s total grape production.

The Yeongdong Grape Festival, hosted by Yeongdong County and organized by the Yeongdong Festival & Tourism Foundation, is a fruit-themed celebration held at various locations including the Yeongdong Sports Complex, Wine Korea, and several rural experience villages. The region's ample sunshine and dramatic day-night temperature differences make it the perfect environment for fruit farming—especially grapes.

The festival features a wide array of programs divided into five main categories: Hands-on Experiences, Sales, Performances, Exhibitions & Food, and Special Events.

🌿 Hands-on Experience Zone
Visitors can enjoy over 30 experience programs such as grape picking, making grape shaved ice, grape stomping, wine foot baths, and even grape fishing.

🛒 Sales Zone
Markets selling grapes from each town and village, local agricultural specialties, and wine products offer visitors a chance to take home the taste of Yeongdong.

🎶 Performance Zone
Festivities include the opening ceremony, fireworks, celebration concerts, and daily performances that keep the energy high.

🍇 Exhibitions & Food Zone
Enjoy local delicacies at the food market and learn more about Korean fruits at the comprehensive fruit exhibition pavilion.

🎤 Special Events
Visitors can also explore the rural experience village, Korean traditional music (gugak) village, and enjoy live gugak performances.

In addition, the Yeongdong Grape National Marathon and the Chupungnyeong Song Festival are held concurrently, offering a multi-festival experience filled with flavor, fitness, and fun.

The Golden Axe and the Silver Axe

The Golden Axe and the Silver Axe is one of Aesop’s fables, and it is also known by the title Hermes and the Dishonest Woodcutter . This tale is often staged as a scene in which a mountain spirit appears and presents a golden axe and a silver axe. Long ago, in a remote village deep in the mountains, there lived a kind woodcutter. One day, while chopping wood, his hand slipped and his axe fell into a pond. As he stood there, troubled and distressed, a mountain spirit appeared and asked what had happened. After hearing the story, the spirit rewarded the honest woodcutter by giving him both a golden axe and a silver axe as gifts. When a wicked woodcutter heard the news, he came to the same pond and deliberately dropped his own axe into the water. When the mountain spirit appeared again, the wicked woodcutter lied. In the end, he could not even get back his iron axe.

Baekje’s Government System and Attire

Baekje was a kingdom founded in 18 BCE by King Onjo. Building its foundation on the fertile natural environment of the Han River basin, the kingdom grew and flourished, reaching its peak under King Geunchogo. Baekje cultivated a refined and elegant culture, but it fell in 660 CE to the allied forces of Silla and Tang. According to legend, Onjo, the son of Jumong, moved south and established the capital at Wiryeseong in the Han River region, first naming the state Sipje . After the death of his brother Biryu, Onjo united the people under his rule, and the name was changed to Baekje , meaning “a hundred joys,” symbolizing the people’s contentment in following him.
