To commemorate Buddha’s Birthday, a Hanji Lanturn was created and installed featuring the phrases “Prosperity of the Republic of Korea” and “A Joy Shared is a World of Happiness.” While the work wasn't designed with symbolic meaning in mind, it was based on a photo kindly provided by the temple’s head monk. The lantern stands 2.5 meters tall.
As I reflect on the written phrases, I can’t help but wonder how wonderful it would be if they truly came to life. With the upcoming election, I hope that a new and better world opens through the act of voting—a precious right and duty of every citizen.
The lantern also features a charmingly humorous depiction of Bodhidharma, which leaves a lasting impression. Installed in two locations on May 3, in celebration of Buddha’s Birthday, the inscription-type Hanji Lanturn will remain lit until the official holiday on May 3 of next month.
